The wool center of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico
If you’re not familiar with Taos Sunflower, my name is Martie, and together with a group of some pretty wonderful women, we operated as Taos Sunflower Yarns & Fibers in the village of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico for five years, from 2003-2008.
Then, one day...I got burned out. The economy was sinking, visitors to our neck of the woods were far and few between, and I realized I’d gone too far off my original path. First I made the decision to shrink the shop and specialize only in yarns and fibers that had passed through artisans’ hands...eliminating our support of big corporations. While this received lots of positive support, there just wasn’t enough business to merit keeping the doors open...so on October 5, 2008, we closed the doors after a very fun week celebrating the Taos Wool Festival with all our friends from near and far.
After a few weeks’ recovery, I got busy all over again and reopened on Etsy.com as TaosSunflowerToo. It’s a perfect little venue for me to sell my own hand spun yarns and hand painted fibers. I’m doing it on “Taos time”...when I’m feeling really creative and have fun things to share with you.
These days, I divide my time between Taos and southern California. I have grandkids there and since I didn’t have grandparents to grow up with, I want to be there for them. This is turning out to be the most wonderful time in my life!
Thanks for stopping by. Please be sure to visit my bulletin board, as well as my blog, where I will post bits of news about my little Etsy shop and write about anything else that happens to be on my mind on any given day!
